What is the easiest way to determine  if a pot is audio or linear and its range? Thanks

use a meter. if it isn't printed on the back.

That's not a dumb question at all.

The easiest way I can think of to tell the taper would be to turn the pot to 50% rotation and then measure the resistance between the wiper and each of the outer lugs. If the resistances are just about the same, it's a linear pot. A log pot will have a much larger difference between the sides.

For the total value, just put your meter across the outer lugs and read the value.
