I was looking at the Opamp Big Muff over at GEO and happened to be snooping eBay in another browser and found an Opamp Big Muff from the 70's for sale; so I bought it (US$140).  I haven't seen any reviews of the opamp big muff...so I was wonderin' if any of you guys had built one or could tell me if the opamps sound good -or if I've just wasted $140 :(

I'm kinda worried here folks.

I think I'm the one responsible for all the recent attention to the op-amp BMP.

I have an original one as well, and I love it. I love it dearly. It's definitely the most different sounding BMP of the clan. It's tone is thick and full of sustain like you'd expect, but the distortion tone and characteristic is more like a "distortion" pedal that a big wooly fuzz. It has a very "rock guitar" tone to it, with a slight peak in the mids. It might make you want to play Eruption or something like that. That's what I think when i hear it... classic late 70's guitar rock vibe.

Of course I don't play music remotely like that, but I love this pedal.

is it THAT different from the transistor version is it?

Are they very rare or collectable?

Rodgre

Well they're not any more rare or collectible than any other "vintage" big muff. They're probably more of an acquired taste, as it seemed that before i started saying how much I loved mine, they were kind of the bastard stepchild of the BMP series. Kind of like having a TS-10 tube screamer...

I think to the right ears, it can be a killer pedal, and like I said, I prefer mine to two russians that I have.

A friend brought an opamp bmp here a while ago. Certainly interesting distortion - I'd agree with Roger's description. I'd say that as the transistor bmp is like velvet, the op amp bmp is corduroy.

I'd have to agree with Roger.  I have a friend that loaned me his op-amp BMP and I loved it.  It seemed to be more my kind of pedal than the regular xistor BMP.  If you don't end up liking it, you can always sell it.  You may lose a few bucks in the process, but this ain't a money makin' hobby, now is it? :-)

I once repaired one bellonging to Conny Blom of the Electric boys ( anyone remember them? ) so i guess you can listen to the "funk'o'metal carpet ride" album for a refference...
...she's all hips...and lips...she knows how to use them to make you flip....
