Check the Debugging Page link at the top of the page.  There is a schem for a simple but very effective DIY Probe.  Try that and also look at RG Keens Debugging pages at GEOFX (also linked at the top of the page)

I would put a meter across the battery terminals to confirm a short.  Then leaving one probe on a battery terminal start checking the case and components on the pcb.  Is your DC socket an insulated one?

Determineing there's a short [using DMM's 'beep' mode]is far cry from finding a short but...
One lead of DMM on battery clip plus should go to ckt board plus and not Gnd.
One Dmm lead on Battery clip neg should go to ground and not pos.
I test for good ground at all points of the ckt that call for it. then test to see that none of the other connects have it, but shouldn't. Same for Plus side...check all yer pos's and poke around to see they aren't where they shouldn't be...

If your battery is getting hot (or warm), you have a short somewhere in your power supply. That happened to me with my on-board FET guitar preamp the other day, I plugged it in and got a lot of popping static kinds of noises. I noticed that battery was getting hot, and immediately realized that I had a short in my power supply.
