For all the other australians out there, where do you get good quality, low value caps?  Jaycar only sells ceramics down in the Pico region, and I went into Dicksmiths a couple of weeks ago to by some polystyrenes, but I was informed that they have now been deleted and will not be stocked anymore - to make things worse they only had stock of two values (that I didn't need) left.

So it would seem now that for the small value caps I can only get ceramics at both my local stores.   I know about Farnell, RS, Rockby (sp?) etc - its just a pain ordering them online, especially if you only really need one value or so and you used to be able to pop down your local store.

Are there any other places that I don't know about? I'm in melbourne btw.

In the major cities both Jaycar and Dick Smith stock MKT caps (the square Metalized Polyester types) and Green-caps (the green Metalized Polyester types).  Altronics also stock them.  You could try mail (and web?) orders.

Green-caps are cheaper, there's nothing wrong with them.

Yup, I'm aware of this - I use the MKT caps generally because they are in a nice small package.  The smallest value either of these come in though is 1 nanofarad (1000pf) (at least that's what Dicksmiths and Jaycar stock).  It's certainly not uncommon to get schematics calling for values much smaller than 1000pf, hence the polystyrene was useful (which came in the range of 1pf through to around 1000pf, at Dicksmiths, from memory).

I know you can also get polyester film caps (non metalised too) this small - panasonic makes them and you can get them at Farnell, but as I said, its a bit of a pain.

I'll check them out and see what they've got.

For sub 1nF values, ceramics are usually OK, where possible use NPO/COG types.  Often Jaycar/DS/Altronics have NPO's in there bins they just don't advertise it.  The 330pF to 820pF region is more variable from those places ie. pot luck.
