That Cid had a way of warming tubes up, and making effects do magical tricks !!!
I don't know that you can get 'that' anymore though...

Hello Hello-
Hendrix was using the Mayer Axis circuit [mounted in a Fuzz Face shell] for that album.
Brian.

mstoppini

I think the Axis is a bit more recent, I believe Jimi's pedal was only a Roger Mayer modified FuzzFace.
I'm quite sure Jimi stomps on the octavia during Band of Gipsys' Machine gun and it's clear the use of the univibe, especially at the beginning of the song.

Hi,

i like to hear to the Live Version from his Concert 1969/1970...

I think that he uses his Vibe at the Beginning (perhaps togetzer with his WahWah, but im not sure)
Whet it goes into that more Agressive Part there may be his Fuzz.
If he uses his Octavia - i dont know - i think not.... but i wasnt there and
could not see

bye

When he begins singing the first verse of Machine Gun, he has the fuzz and univibe on, but he's using a lot of guitar volume control, you can tell, demonstrating the Axis fuzz's remote controlness. It just makes that univibe grind!  No Octavia on Machine Gun, but pretty much every other track on BOG uses it in one way or the other!  You could tell, because when it's kicked on, you can hear its nastiness!  8)

Hello Hello--
The Axis circuit was in use from late '68 onward and was installed into stock Fuzz Face shells for live performances.  It is VERY obvious on the BOG and Isle of Wight  gigs.

I thought Jimi always put his wah before is fuzz?... did'nt he?

petemoore

Got to be Octave on Machine Gunn when he's doing the aerial sweep bomb dives [after he caught the bullet] just after the exchange of automatic weaponry between Guitar and Drums [chakc chacka chacka chacka chak..kacha kacha kacha kacha kacha kach]...well if it's not ocatve is certainly sounds like one to me.
Actually it's like on that one he's pulling out all the stops, and subjecting the amps to lengthy and cruel punishment !!!

Hi,

that is a thing i wonder about, because, when i put my Wah before my Fuzz, or any Fuzz, i dont have a WahWah effect. So i put my Fuzz before
the Wah...
But i dont have an old VOX Wah, it is a MrCryBaby and it seem to use a Buffer.. mybe, that an original VOX Wah, like Jimi used would work..

does anybody know better than me?

bye

I use a slightly mod'ed Cry Baby (true bypass & srv tone) & a fulltone '69.  When I put the wah after the 69, the wah seems to be too overpowing, decreasing my fuzz effect.  It makes the fuzz sound kinda dead.  If I put the wah before fuzz... the sweep on the wah seems a little less consistant/accurate, but the overall tone sounds much richer and more Hendrixy... to me any way  :)

Hi ,

There's a lot of question about the place of the wha ,i found that with stock effects
Wha ,FF ,Univibe : funny noises when the Wha is On
FF ,Wha , Univibe :the Fuzz Face output signal is filtering by the wha :not a vocal Wha ,sort of synth Fuzz
Wha ,Univibe , Fuzz Face OK sounding for some Hendrix sound .
Wha , modified Fuzz Face (input buffer) Ok but Fuzz Face sound is ittle different more like a Tone Bender Sound(wich is absolutely normal because TB has got  a third trans in it)

Thinking about roger Mayer had prepaired the Jimmy FX's ,i'm not certain but i think that he buffered or chenge the FX's in their boxes,i am right?

I doubt if they were 6550's in those Marshalls.I also believe it was just a stock si FF,no Mayer mods. One thing I am pretty sure of,is that it was real LOUD.

brian wenz

Hullo Hullo Again--
Hendrix did not use stock Fuzz Face circuits from 1968 until his death.  Mayer began modding them in '67  [because very few of the original Fuzz Faces sounded good straght out of the box] and from '68 on installed the Axis circuit into the Fuzz Face shells.

Article supolseldy a recant of Jimi's gear written by RM.
It said 'i was putting other ckts in FF boxes...which to me sound about right...without an input buffer wah's just don't work 'right' with FF's?
I don't know [who does] really what was in those boxes but I've suspected for sometime that it was more than just a FF and Wah ['Stock'] doing the Fuzzed Wah sounds we 'all' use as a 'standard' of reference of a Tone 'styling'.
 I Don't have a FF wah with buffers...maybe later today I will...

with a ff and wah I see four possible place for an input buffer's' to be placed

After reading all the replys on this thread, I've come to my own conclusion for this...  I suppose the only real way any of us could know EXACTLY what he used is to either find Eric Barret (Jimi's equipment mgr.) and interview him if he's still alive OR wait to we all die and go to guitar heaven, and ask Jimi himself!!!     I'm sure Jimi used Roger's stuff, but does HE remember exactly what circuits he put in those shells?  Of course he will say the Axis, which indeed it very well could have been, but then again, he is trying to sell his boxes, isn't he?!!  And we must remember that Jimi had a HELL of a lot of watts behind him,  I mean 4 full stacks sometimes...  Frightening!!!!  The ability to CONTROL all that has to mentioned also!  I play a plexi half stack, and I tried another cab to make it full, OUCH!!!  TOO MUCH, MAN! Of course I'm 40, and I don't claim to be anywhere near to the master!

So many opinions, so many opinions.. Isn't it great?!   8)

Hello Hullo--
I was playing in quite a few different bands at the same time as Hendrix was around [and played a few of the same venues, too] .   Back then ['60's] it was easier to find out about someones' gear 'cuz it was a MUCH smaller scene and if YOU didn't personally see the stuff on stage or in a studio somewhere then your roadie did!  Hendrix used Marshall, Sunn, Fender, Sound City, etc. etc.  amps for as many years as he was alive  [depending on the country the gig was in and what had broken the day before!].  In the studio he used a GOOD  Fuzz Face [germ and silicon] that were tweaked by Mayer off and on,  a Fuzzrite, Maestro Fuzz, etc.
The Axis Fuzz was first used  on the 1967 recordings and used from '68 on for live gigs ["Axis: Bold as Love"].  The Axis worked MUCH better with the Gibson guitars that Hendrix was using more and more.  This is only a partial  list of stuff......he would go out and buy all kinds of pedals to try out in the studio for his albums [Mannys  and Sam Ash in New York to name two places....]
The BOG and Isle of Wight were both Axis-powered!
Brian.

b_rogers

this ones a silicon right? doesnt it look a little different than stock?
