I've been tracing the mic pre on my Mackie mixer but can't believe someone hasn't already done it. Does anyone know where to find a schematic?

Nah, I just want to make a small battery powered mic pre for my minidisc.

you might want to look for the exelent ssm2017 ic. its discontinued but easy to find, makes a great micpreamp with just one resistor ( pot ) seting the gain....if you cant fint it, there are simullar ic's like INA128 from burr-brown..I havnt tried that one but the specs look good. from unity to 80db ( 1-10000 )gain, low voltage requirements and low current consumption..all for only about a dollar/euro...

If you want to use your minidisc for "bootlegging" some loud gigs, then you won't need an active mic preamp. If you power ordinary electret capsules with 9V, the will deliver enough output swing to go directly into the line-level input of your minidisc recorder.

Taken from http://www.minidisc.org/homemade_mics.html:

Nice to see some people are still using minidisc  8)

 I made a simple one opamp mic preamp with 5534 opamp. It might not be as good as Mackie but was cheap and simple, and few easy available components only. Did even design a pcb for it. Maybe I could put it online tomorrow. Unfortunately I can not open the pcb and layout file just now (files are on other cputer) but I could take few pics...

Thanks to everyone who replied. It seems the Mackie mic pre schematic is like trying to find out the formula for Coke - it's sold everywhere from Denver to Delhi but no one knows what's inside!

i'm sure i saw the 1604 schematic in an audiophile page,so keep searching,it's around somewhere...

it was a matter of typing vr1604 in yahoo

Thanks for that - I wasn't having any luck searching for "Mackie Schematic"; just a matter of knowing what to search for!

That said, I can see now that the VLZ preamps are different to the ones in my old original 1202...
