what is the difference between the two? could one be the other? what defines the difference?

Hi,

if You compare the two Schematics, there is only slightly difference..

The Buffer does not increase the signal - the Booster does.

f. eg. Discrete Buffer and LinearPowerBooster on Generalguitargadgets.com

little Addition:

for my taste, a Buffer steals dynamic. Without the Sound is more open.

Doing some reads at these sites will tell alot more.
A buffer 'improves' impedance, changes tone only slightly under certain conditions, and is generally unity gain or less. Emitter and source followers are the kind I know of using, however OA;s can be used as buffers also.
A booster can increase the amplitude of the signal, and also alters impedance. The signal output goes through the collector or an OA output pin on the types I've seen.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
