Now I have your attention ;)

I have here the ampage phase 45 schematic in front of me, I was wondering if it's worth building. Or should I go for the phase 90? Either way I need a good phaser :D

Built both...the 90's extra stages make it 'more' phazey in my builds.
The 45 has the cool tone to it though...either one's cool, but the 90 is like more 'immersive'
My personal two favorites are the SS and the EZ Vibe.
I ran the 90 [fast sweep] into the SS [slow w/Deep sw on] and was getting the phaze [and volume] in/out sounds like on Electric Ladyland...
I think a Phazer would do very well having a treadle [like a wah] on the speed control.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

.....I built the Small Stone at GGG-I found the metal-can CA3094's....it is probably the best sounding one I ever owned.....I run it at higher than usual voltage and the speed of the lfo increases a lot.....not sure why,but with the Univibe mod it rocks!.....

I totally agree whith pete, build them both. I just finished the phase 45 and it's great. I wish i had the chips for the SS, because it''s one of my favs too, but the Phase 45 has a sound of it's own, and so does the 90 (in my [long] build list). I have not tried the easyvibe yet, but now that i have found photocells, i guess i'll have to build it too  :D

dr,

The speed is set by adjusting the amount of current fed into pin 4 of the 3094 serving as LFO.  That current comes off a voltage divider formed by a 27k and 7k5 resistor that divides down the supply voltage.  Increase the supply voltage and what comes off the junction of those two resistors is different.

Ben,

The number of stages you want to aim for depends on what it is you want it to do.  If you want over-the-top phasing, more stages is better.  If you want something a little more defined and focal, 2 to 4 stages is good.  A year ago I would have said that you need 4 to be able to turn a phaser into a Univibe, but JC Maillet has had success with conversion of a lowly Phase 45, so there is one more barrier removed to building a Phase 45.  Just note that if you like "peaky" sounds, a 2-stager will note get you all that much effect of regeneration.

Personally, I've built Small Stones and the LM13600-based Ross Phaser.  They are both nice and sound very similar, but the Ross is a whole lot easier and cheaper to build.  It also has better regeneration capabilities and lends itself just as nicely to Univibing.  I recommend it.

dr

....Mark,is there a Ross phaser layout somewhere to try?also-how does it compare to the Jordan phaser? (I've really wanted to build one of those Jordan ones-just never been lucky enough to find one)......

Gringo

You can find the ross phaser  at Tonepad, i think.

Yeah it's at tonepad.

Mark,

I used to have a BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser, and I believe it could switch between 8 and 12 stages, not sure though. Mode 1 (8 stage) was OK but maybe still a little thick but the 12-stage Mode 2 was so thick that you couldn't hear what you were playing, even with the regeneration control right down. The Phase 45 sounds like fun to build and after that I might attempt a phase 90. I don't know yet, but I think I've decided on the phase 45 for now.

Anyway, on the schematic for the small stone, I see that the reference schematic uses OTAs for the phase shifting. Is that maybe an option for an easy perf build?

Hi,
I've done a phase 90 last year with Tonepad PCB .Its was just a little hard for to find four transistors with the same gain , but it's a cool sounding device , but it will be easiest  for the Phase 45 because it has got only two transistors .It is say that Phase 45 is a more subtle effect than the phase 90.

Maneco

dear friends,
my best advice, before building any fet phaser is :
"BUILD A JFET MATCHER"
then ,with a couple of matched ones ,try the phase45,fom tonepad,it's a classic, coll sounding...

but,to tell an old story, three years ago i built a phase 90 clone with the resonance mod,and i did not knew about the matching thing...i used four bf245,bought at a local electronic store, and guess what?it sounded cool!!!
(still sounds cool,i love it...)

go ahead phasing

Maneco

smoguzbenjamin

Hmmm. Here's a stupid question: how would you 'match' two FETs? :?

Maneco

theres an article in geofex explaining it,you don´t match them, you pick many and select the closest ones

Gearbuilder

Hi Maneco,

Thank you, i'm going to try BF245,and yes Ben, try the R.G. matching JFET method .Yes 2 JFET don't have the same spec's.(or you are alucky man!!)This link is cool if Phase 45 doesn't give you satisfaction:

Did you build that phase 90? Looks authentic

Sweet gringo, thanks :) I have to go now, girlfriend calling ;)

Hi,
Yes ,it a clone really ! . I took a photo from the web and i found decals ;they are pretty the same than the original.I've got some problems with the enclosure size, the battery touch the corner of the box and i coudn't close my pedal correctly.I cut the enclosure with a dremel tool and it was OK after this operation. The idea to have a vintage appearence is an accident.Yes ,i was painting my box when this one fell on the ground ,,i'd rather to repaint it again then i let dry and put the decals, and i finished the job with two coats of clear varnish ;it's like the Fender Custom Shop Relics!!
A good phasor too: easyvibe from John Hollis ,cool Jimi Hendrix sounding pedal,i did this one and a friend gave me a  broken wha-wha  enclosure.
