I 'm not impressed with the IC but i have emailed the guy with the trannies and he seems to be on the level .He measures everyting he has and matches them for a reasonable price and has perfect feedback.

Wait a freakin' second here! If it was a WORKING 808, why the F did he yank the chip?! That makes no sense! I told myself I wouldn't read these goddamn ebay posts, what's the matter with me? Now I'm completely irritated...

Yea, that occured to me a little while ago with another topic similar to this one.  But it makes sence if you think like the seller.  Why sell a working TS for $100 when you can take the chip out, charge 50, pull the chipless PCB out, sell that for 100, then sell the enclosure for another 100.  I don't agree with it though.

BTW - I don't see how this auction means "Ebay Sucks". This guy's ethics are what's in question. Is Ebay supposed to tell this guy he's a dick and can't sell his chip because he's taken an 808 out of circulation? Not like I think that's like clubbing a baby seal to death or anything. And lord knows they can't send ninjas to assasinate anyone who bids on auctions like this, no matter how many times I email them begging them to.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, ninja's..........I wonder if I can get one from eBay.....

I started the original thread about this for some laughs. You can see we don't get to serious about it. It's more hilarious than annoying. "Professionally extracted"! Sounds like a high tech bowel movement! Photos on request! Too much!

Should we be mad about this guy, or the person who buys it? Check his feed-back. Seems like a straight shooter. Funny thing is, he could have pulled the chip out of the 808 to put a NE5532 in! Is he trying to recoup some of his pedal investment?  I'm sure plenty here wish they could ( of course, not that blatently).

It's weird, someone sells a TS-9 with 808 mods and barely gets $80, and this guy just might get his $50 for the chip. It's all in how you word your ad, not the product you sell. His isn't even worded that well. We'll see.

Like the old saying goes, a good price is what the seller and buyer agree upon. Do those guys who sell 808 mod kits for $5-$15 seem so bad now? Their market is someone who can solder but doesnt want to get into the rest of the DIY thing. "just get the parts, put em' in, and play" Nothing wrong with that.

To me this is an interesting study in buyers, sellers, and ad wording. Human nature too. If you plan on selling some of your stuff on eBay, start watching some of these ads and see how they do. When you see a patern emerge of which ads sell and which fail, you'll get a better feeling for how to word yours. Ebay is one big case study on ethics, morality, and marketing.

He didn't say he pulled the chip out of a Tubescreamer.  Read it again.  He said an 808-era Ibanez.  In other words, he's scavenging chips out of another Ibanez pedal, likely that has multiple chips in it and doesn't fetch the high prices that 808's do.

If he can get $50 or $45, then good for him.  Nobody's holding a gun to anyone's head and making them fork over the money.

My Ibanez ADL(analog delay line) has the "magic" chip in it. Whoo Hooo!! For that matter so does my CS-505!

A lot of old, cheap consumer junk ranging from things like clock radios to fax machines and stuff have those JRC4558 chips in them. People really do make a big deal out of nothing, don't they? The old addage "buyer beware" applies here. If someone is is foolish enough to pay $50 for a single IC chip because it has "magical properties", then they deserve what they get. Unfortunately, with the web these days, bad information or mis-information gets reproduced over and over and myths keep getting propogated and people keep buying into this junk.  :(

Maybe it's a coincidence, but there's some guy (same person or a friend?) in Victoria who's currently selling a TS808, and asking $600 starting price.

This is his negative feedback from e-bay Australia;

Once in a while, at least between us here (because we know better), we can take advantage of some situations.  I scored a Foxrox Paradox TZF and expression pedal, fairly new, for a total of $350.  That's a bargain for that combo.  Ebay's good if you know what a good deal is.  It's a bitch if you don't, sucker!

I don't shed many tears for fools separated from their money, but I do laugh when con-men get their due.  It's too bad we can't really become the Ebay police and bust these chumps :twisted:
