one of the places that everyone recommended that I go was called 'lark in the morning'.. they had pretty much every unusual 'world music' instrument I've ever seen or heard of (and lots that I hadn't)..

Wow! That guy shreds. I wonder what the two pedals are? Is that a fuzz and an envelope driven phaser? I love it!

I have a friend who plays the electric kalimba (actually he plays two at the same time). I think most instruments are pedal compatible.

When are they going to put out a disc?

MarkB, I know that place. At least as a mail order outfit. I've been told they've cleaned up their act a bit. They used to be a good place to pay through the nose for tourist-grade ethnic instruments. But if you wanted the selection, there was no other place like it. I was told recently by someone that their prices are more reasonable these days and their selection is even better than ever.

Peter, it's funny you mention the kalimba. The kora, despite being  a very different instrument, is actually quite similar to play, with notes alternating between hands. For some hardcore DIY electric kalimba stuff, look here:

From the piece, I assume they just placed a piezo on a normal kora. There is a electrified kora-like instrument commercially available called the Gravikord, by a guy named  Bob Grawi. You can see t here:

Bill Laswell and Foday Musa Suso have done some collaborations featuring the instrument in music with that definite Bill Laswell influence.

I bought a VERY nice mandolin from Lark in the Morning on a trip a few years ago.  They had a fantastic selection, but a lot of it was tourist grade stuff, fun to wander through for an hour or so!
