The 470k is fine. Increasing the input cap any more that 1uF will not change the sound dramatically.

The input of the circuit is loading down the pickups of your guitar so much, that the sound is dramatically changed.

To make it less brite, increase C15 from 0,47uF to 4,7uF of 10uF.

Hope this helps a bit.

I think I have realized that the brighter sound (which isn't all that bad) that I get with the input buffer is how the effect is supposed to sound.  The sound is SUPPOSED to be bright when I am using my strat's bridge pickup with tones at 10.  It sounds pretty good now and the wah works well.

Thanks everyone for the help... now onto the tone stage at the end.. maybe I should try the big muff tone stage.

Triffid

Ok, I tried the original tone stage and the big muff and wow... the big muff tone stage sounds way better.  I think I have actually got a very well rounded distortion now... all kinds of different tones.  Here is the final schematic I used fyi... now on to a perfboard for this baby :)

Ok, I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing about this on going project of mine but I though I would let you know what I have come up with so far...

1.  I am now using a TL074 instead of TL072 and using one of the extra op amps for an input buffer... sounds way better to me

2.  I removed the entire cap/resistor stage before the first opamp in the schematic, now I go straight from the input buffer into pin 3 of my TL074, with a reference to Vref of course.  This really seemed to cut down on the sqeaky-ness of the highs and really brings out the tone of the guitar better.

3.  I replaced the 1n4148 clipping diodes with 1n60 germanium diodes, and wow, a much more pleasing sound.  It is a much smoother.

With different settings of the gain, contour, and tone pots, this seems to be pretty versitile.

One question... I would like to use the last op amp of my TL074 for an output buffer, but I am not sure where in the stage chain I should put it.  Before the big muff tone section, or after?

Thanks in advance

Hey, Triffid.  Very nice clip and cool circuit.  Thanks heaps for sharing.

Thanks brett... I should update the clip though... it sounds a bit different since that recording.
