T-Shirt Transfer

Do most of you iron on the transfer to a painted box or just the bare metal?  Does one work better than the other?

I have a box that I am doing with a Flip flop paint job and may want to add some graphics with the transfer method.  If the transfer doesn't come out right is it easy to get it off of a painted surface without damaging the paint?

I am little scared in putting the time into the paint and then goof it up with the transfer if it doesn't take.

I don't think you can iron a transfer on a painted box without winding up with a big mess...I imagine the paint would turn to goop.
