quick question

I'm doing the Easy Drive today, and i made a quick stop to radio shack to get some caps and the transistor...

well, as it turns out they don't have any 2n5089's... all i have are some 2n3904 and 2n306's... would they work? even if it wouldn't sound as good or whatever... would it work?

the 2n3904 has a hfe of like 100... while the 2n5089 have a much much higher gain?

would piggybacking 2n3904's work? (if one won't that is)

U R correct-
the 2N5088/89 has a higher gain(Hfe) than the 2N3904/06.
88/89 R 300min 2 900max.
04/06 R 70 2 300.  BIG difference!!
i've gone thru 50 2N3904's checking 4 Hfe & found most were around 100.
most less, a few had Hfe of 150.
Putting 2 04/06 in "darlington" config won't B the same.
i'm sure someone here can offer several HiHfe subs.
weather U can get @ RS is another story.
EasyDrive id definitely a good first build!!
