What ohm pot for headphone volume control?

I want to run a volume control for 3 pairs of headphones off of an amp I built.  What is a good place to start for the ohm rating?  I have a few 100K dual ganged pots that I may try first.

Without a schematic reference, I'd suggest starting with the dual ganged 100k, but balance L/R will be preset.

One side is obtrusively louder than the other, a [small...'?'] tapering resistor [socket?] could be added to equalize L/R volume.

Depends where you're going to put the volume control.  I would start with a 50k at the input (before the amp, from your source).  Assuming you're using line level devices, this should be a good match.

Presumably you want to tap the headphone off an amp which driving speakers?  and you want the volume controls at the output of the power amp?

Firstly, unless it's a small amplifier, you will need to drop the level down even when the pot is on full - otherwise you could pop the phones or your ears.

Without the power rating of the amp and how hard the amp is going to be driven (ie. low or flat stick) it's hard to give a value.  I'd say a 100 to 500ohm pot (err on the low side), with say a 220ohm resistor between the amp output and the clockwise end of the pot - adjust the resistor to get the volume you need.
