Germanium Transistors?

I'm building a Big Muff clone for my wife, my first build.  I'm trying to use the best components possible--tantalum caps for the two big electrolytic, silver mica caps for the ceramic.

I found a place in town that sells Germanium transistors for $3 each.  Should I try some of those?  Or are they not as suited for the BMP?

Gracias

Not sure that would be okay if the schematic does not call for it., but, yu can always experiment !!!!  You may like it better or not.
I would highly recommend getting metallized capacitors for the 1uf, .1uf, .01uf, etc...I use them in all of my pedals now, bit more $ but worth it for me.
Peace!

Germanium is not magic. There are very few places where a germanium transistor (if you can find a good one) will perform better than silicon.

In the BMP particularly, germanium's disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Use silicon. 2N5088 is my preference in general, but in the BMP the circuit design effectively covers up most transistor differences.

By the way, Electro Harmonix is infamous for using whatever parts they could get their hands on cheaply in Big Muffs. Using premium parts may or may not produce better sound.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
