A local electronics store carries three types of board-mounted relays: reed, electromechanical and solid state.

Could anyone please explain the differences for me, and which of these is most suitable for audio switching?  (Or, what characteristics to look for which will make for good audio switching?)

Thanks!

Reed and electromechanical are OK.
But, 'audio' ore 'small signal' relays, may have better contacts for switching audio signals, some relays are intended for switching high voltage power lines & these may have contacts that are not as neat on closing.
Forget about the solid state relays, thats for industrila power stuff.
