Well, this is my third circuit that is not a distortion circuit!
I guess people can change...

Anyhow, quick question:

The 2N5952 FETs. What can I substitute those with? Will J201s or 2N5257s work OK with this circuit? Or how about MPF102s?

RG recommended the 2n5485 as a sub. I've only used the 5952, so I can't help there. BTW, Mouser is back in stock on the 2N5952, I just ordered some today.

Mine is loaded with a couple of mpf102s matched at -3.6v or so. Very subtle, i just love it. I tried it with 2n5457s and the sweep was more present (matched at -1v or so).
Cut it large, and smash it into place with a hammer.

Well, I just got done with it a little while ago. Started the project Friday night, was completely done by Saturday afternoon. Used the tonepad layout. Everything is built per that layout except for I used a 200K trimpot instead of the 250K specified on the schematic. I just popped in a couple of J201s, didn't worry about matching, and it sounds pretty darn cool! I may try some other FETs, and try matching them, but so far I like it "right out the box". I get a nice phaser sound that I like at about 3:00, and at 5:00, it almost sounds like a tremolo, well, tremolo-ish. And with the 200K trimpot set around the midpoint, I get a flanger-like sound.  I personally don't think this circuit sounds that subtle, especially with distortion in front of it. (It is a little on the subtle side when playing clean, though)

Has anyone else had this experience with it sounding kinda like a flanger? I'm just wondering if that is "normal", or if I have stumbled onto something here...

Anyhow, here's a picture:

You can't really tell with my crummy camera, but the paint is red with a bronze overspray. It looks a lot better in real life....
