New OD250!

Here's a picture of the inside of my new OD250 that I just finished today:

I ended up stripping all the paint off the box, and sanding it with 400 grit sandpaper to give it a brushed look.  I got tired of trying to paint in the crappy rainy humid weather that we were having...so I didn't even put a clear on the aluminum...I'll just have to keep it wiped clean ;)  I'll try to get an outside shot of the box soon...when I tried earlier the picture came out too dark...the flash on the camera had some kind of wierd reaction with the shiny aluminum.

The circuit board is a heavily modified version of the TonePad Dist + board, adapted to the OD250.  I added a 100-ohm resistor in series with the power supply and a 100uF filtering capacitor and 1N4002 reverse polarity diode to the circuit supply side of the 100-ohm resistor.  There are also 2 sets of clipping diodes...3mm red LEDs and a 1N914/1N4002 pair, which are switched by a miniature toggle switch....I used DPDT just because it's the only one that I had, but a SPDT will work better since it'll be physically smaller.

I changed the input capacitor from 0.01uF to 0.0047uF for more treble response with my all-Fender rig.

The OPAMP is a Burr Brown OPA134PA single opamp...a VERY nice IC with extremely low noise characteristics

Here's a schematic of the OD250 as I built it:

Regarding getting a brushed look on aluminum - find/buy a bench grinder (often under $50 on sale at Sears) and a brush wheel for it.  The grinder will take care of it in under 30 seconds.  Just be sure to wear gloves :)

Nice looking layout as usual Phillip!  8)  Can't wait to hear the sound report.   :)

nice one! i really like your new builds in the 1590b boxes.. i especially like the germ axis fuzz on your site.. stripped down and raw!

sometimes when i get a little burnt on building pedals, especially to make a buck...  i look over the pctures on your site of your emaculate builds.. and it gives me the encouragement to get back down to the bench and build a pedal
as perfectly and patiently ans i can.. even knowing that probably no one will ever see the guts of my builds.. i think there is there is something to be said about making them aesthetically pleasing on the inside too.. i really wish i could get some of those sexy clear PCB boards that you get.. i think you told me that you get those through your college??? anyway.. i appreciate what you bring to our DIY community..

BTW, are you pleased with the sound of your OD 250?

Thanks guys!  Ryan - I've stopped using LEDs completely now...they're really not all that necessary at all, since they do add a bit of a pop when the pedal is switched on and they also increase the current consumption of the pedal.  The new OD250 doesn't have a LED...only a power jack since I intend on making this pedal a permanent part of my pedalboard.  If you like the raw look, just wait til you see the outside of this one...nothing but bare brushed aluminum...silver and black...not ever a clear coat on top of the aluminum and no decals.

I get the clear PCB material from Mouser Electronics in the 4"x6" sheets, Mouser part number 501-FR4X6S.

I very much like the sound of my new OD250, especially with the switchable clipping diodes.  It can do a Fuzz Face sound quite nicely, but it's also capable of a subtle to aggressive overdrive sound.

Okay, here's a shot of the outside of the box...still not the greatest picture.  I think the shiny aluminum does some wierd stuff with the flash on the camera...makes it look kinda dark.

very nice~
i really like the black plastic washer too..all of the pedals on my board look similiar, but i have some vinly decals i put on them.. but there is no indication of what type of effects they are.. just mysterious shiny silver boxes.. i sotra like to keep my effects a secret.
thanks for the mouser part number too.. i use your site as a refference when i do mouser orders..

Your builds always look so clean. :D I know there are many here who find them inspirational.
