Latching relay for bypass?

Can a switch actuator and a 3pdt latching relay be use as a a reliable and tonaly accepted bypass?

Sure it can.  It'll suck power like crazy if you're powering from a 9V battery though.

Actually, if it's a -*latching*- relay, it will not necessarily suck current continuously from the battery. However, you do need to have something in addition to the actuator and relay to cause the current to flow to switch the relay, then >>> stop flowing <<< which is where you save current by using a latching relay.

It's like toilets. Flowing water toilets were known in the days of ancient Greece. It wasn't until the 1800's that a British inventor figured out how to automatically stop the water from flowing.

The greeks were so close to the toilet problem with their feedback water clock.

Here's the sigle-coil latching relay driver I use in my pedals:

It works quite well, of course there is some quiescent current drain from the op amps but nothing compared to what the relay requires for switching.

How's the bypass noise? Does the mechanical action leak into the audio stream?
