I just recieved a massive pack of IC's, and I guess some of them are timers and some a op-amps.
what is the difference between two timers? and between two op-amps?

If I see a specific IC is used as a timer or op-amp in a circuit, and I don't have that exact IC, how do I know which one to replace it with?

I find it funny how I can have close to 1000 components, yet I never seem to have enough parts to make a project. :icon_eek:

Best way to know if two ICs are interchangeable is to check the datasheets for those ICs and make sure they perform the same function, and have the same pinout.  For the most part, most op amps and dual op amps are interchangeable, but usually they have a slightly different set of specifications, which can effect how they sound, how much current they draw, what voltage they work with etc... Best thing to do is to use sockets for any ICs you use in a project so you can switch them out as the mood strikes!

Ok thanks. I do use sockets, so I should just change them to and fro and see which one I like?

The French connection

google the IC number...look for data sheet...or search on this forum with your number ;)...and if you really find nothing, ask here.

I know, but the pedal i built does not boost...it just increases volume!

Just make sure before you use an IC you're not sure about you check the datasheet and make sure the pinout is the same.  Also using the datasheet, make sure your circuit isn't going to supply the IC with more current or voltage than it can handle.  Usually you can find lists of comparable ICs online, but like Dan says, if you can't find anything, ask here!
