What characteristic parameter of a Fet can be compared with the Mu (gain factor) of a tube?

Isn't that it what you are looking for? If I remember it correctly, the gain of a FET is defined by its transconductance and the size of the source resistor. I don't know much about tubes, but don't they have their transconductance specified in datasheets too?

transconductance? transconductance!
