I am trying to drive a 12V relay from an IC and A 2N3055 is too large for the application and a 2N5088 can't drive the relay (it activates but doesn't latch).  Any ideas on what may have slightly more power disappation than a 2N5088 but still the same size.

Nevermind, I found sme TO-220 3055s.

My favorite three for driving small relays are...

PN2222
2N3904
2N4401

a 2N3055 is awefully large for most relays, but it should work fine with enough base current. Usually if something like a 3055 is needed, I'll use one of the three transistors above to drive it from logic level outputs.

What is the current required by the relay coil?
