Would someone suggest a good range of part values for a beginner

I'd like to lay in a bunch of components of various values and was hoping someone with a little more experience than I could suggest some reasonable ranges of values for the following components.
I know some of the more unusual stuff may have to be orderd as needed but if there are commonly used components I'd like to have them on hand.

  • Capacitors
  • Restistors
  • Pots

My wife is very understanding and is encouraging me to, "Get whatever you need".  So I figured I'd ask.

Thanks in advance.

find one of those value packs of a couple hundred resistors/capacitors on ebay or wherever, it gets you plenty of most common values, otherwise:

generally for resistors its something like
47, 100, 220, 470, 680, 1k, 2k2, 3k3, 4k7, 6k8, 8k2, 10k, 22k, 47k, 68k, 100k, 150k, 220k, 330k, 470k, 1M, 2M2, 4M7
most common ones you should order more of seem to be the ones based around 10 or 47

for capacitors
ceramic -  10pF, 33pF, 47pF, 100pF, 220pF, 470pF, 680pF
metal film/mylar/whatever - 1nF, 2.2nF, 4.7nF, 6.8nF, 10nF, 22nF, 47nF, 100nF, 220nF, 470nF, 680nF, maybe all the way up to 1uF
electrolytic -1uF, 2.2uF, 4.7uF, 10uF, 22uF, 47uF, 100uF, and larger if you need them

potentiometers: 1k, 10k, 100k, 500k in both linear and log tapers

Also remember that resistors can be wired in series to get the sum of the 2 (or more) resistors. Useful for getting those random values you may not have  ;)

With a wife THAT supportive, I'd find something for her on ebay as well while you're stocking up on resistors and transistor sockets!  :icon_biggrin:
