Hey I was curious if anybody can recommend a pedal project that is similar to an early orange/matamp harmonic-rich, fuzzy tone. I currently use a silverface fender bassman 100 and have been ok with my homemade boost and vintage rat...but it seems a bit muddy to me...im looking for something to cut through very crunchy like without sounding too metal sounding. any ideas?
thanks,
tyler

Yes, Call it the Orange Jfet.
 Like Orange Tube.
You can make a 9V Jfet Amp of your Tube Amp schematic.
 >>>Other English Jfet 'Amp in a Stompbox' [much of the schematic topology in most cases applies to tubes and Jfets].
Another tack would be listen and re-compile sound clips that sound close to what you're envisioning.

im not looking to create my own...im just wondering if anybody has discovered a schematic of a pedal that has the same tonal charachteristics of an old orange tube amp...even a little more on the brown sound side...i just need something harmonically rich and lets every note shine through. any other suggestions?

Try Ed G's  BSIAB II, "Brown sound in a box"  thats about as vintage harmonic rich as you can get !!

let's see if the guys @ runoffgroove can help us on this.

a *rat* pedal isn't letting you cut through? it's not bein harmonically rich enough? that's pedal's practically the definition of all that. hah. definition, literally ;-)

BSIABII *is* great, though, worth a build.

How about you just buy a Crate and LEARN TO PLAY. Stupid kids and their crappy Fender amps...

Seriously now, the BSIAB II would be a good choice. It sits on that border of fuzz and distortion quite nicely, shading towards distortion. If you like the actualy distortion characteristics of your Rat, you might want to try an Ibanez Fat Cat. Check the soundclips at tonefrenzy.com for each one and compare them yourself. The Lovetone Brown Source might be a good choice too.

and if all else fails I'll trade you a Crate for the Bassman.

Just a suggestion:  when I cranked up the mids (all the way to 8 1/2!) and the highs (same) and rolled off the bass a bit (around 6-7) on my crappy crate, I suddenly had TONS of clarity like I'd never had before.  I was shooting for that "orange" sound too.  I won't say I nailed it, but I'm happy enough until I can get one (or build one, bwah ha ha).
