Hey guys

I've been lurking this forum for quite some time now.
I have succesfully build the 'beginner project' and I'm now ready for the next step.
I want to make myself a Fuzz for christmas, but I have no clue which one to make.
I mainly write alternative rock so I need a "nasty" fuzz.
Maybe like Muse or prodigy.

Any recommendations??

build the bazz fuzz it is so simple sounds great and is nice and nasty

ToneBender MKII Professional...one of the most aggressive, yet good sounding fuzz pedals around!

For even more fun, you could try out two of the other slight variations of the original MKII that I have schematics of there...the Marshall Supa Fuzz and the Vox MKII.

The MindBender is an NPN Germanium version of the MKII which sounds terrific and works with modern negative ground pedal power supplies.

build the uglyface ( http://www.home-wrecker.com/uglyface.html ) or the buzzbox, both at home wrecker. i want to build both, but i am too poor and lack the skills. hahaha, darn those gods of talents and economics!

I second tha Buzz Box. Very nasty, and easy to build. Ugly Face is also great, but has a greater degree of difficulty.

Damn, all these choices :x I think I will build them all! :D

well, when you say 'nasty' do you mean atonal? like, when i say 'nasty' i want it to sound broken.  i want it to sound really really gross and unmusical, not really hard, really gross.  the buzz box probably walks that line, while the uglyface has the potential to cross it.  i wouldnt call the bazz fuzz 'nasty', its just deep and really muddy.

Hmmm...I really like the fuzz in 'Newborn' from Muse. (to give you an example)

By 'Nasty' I mean nastier then the Big Muff & the Fuzz Face.
Those are too civilized for me.
I really like the Uglyface, together with the envelope filter.
Are there soundsamples of the Buzzbox?

Most fuzzes will sound like sorry victims of voodoo possessions if pushed hard enough.  One of the reasons why the Tonebender sounds harsher than a Fuzz Face is simply because it has an extra gain stage.  I have a Shin-Ei Companion Fuzz.  A nice fuzz in and of itself, and variation on the Fuzz-Rite from what I can tell, and clearly poised right at the edge of sickness.  Stick ANY clean boost ahead of it, and you go immediately and directly from mildly sick to the intensive care unit.

DO NOT come to premature conclusions about the tonal quality of a fuzz based on the amount of gain a *stock* version has, or based on how it sounds with a guitar plugged straight in.  If you spread out the schematics of a wide array of simpler and over the top units in front of you, what you'll basically see is that over the top generally means more gain stages, and occasionally double clipping.  Ricky Vance's Heavy Metal Pedal is one such example, but if you browse through DOD, Ibanez and Boss schems for their heavier items, you'll find something similar.

Does that extra gain HAVE to be in the same package?  Not at all.  A gain of 500 split into a gain of 10 in one pedal and gain of 50 in another (gains are multiplicative so 10 * 50 = 500) is still a gain of 500.

heres a nasty fuzz for you to build....though id recommend changing Q1 to a MPSA13 (i havent had a chance to change the schematic yet)....

in its highest settings, its like an extreme version of a ampeg scrambler....on its tamer settings , its a huge, slightly nasal sounding ring modulated fuzz...but still controllable !!!

enjoy !

All good choices!  Let me throw in Tim Escobedo's Tripple Fuzz (v1.3) and RM's Axis Fuzz, both quite nasty.

There is a pcb layout for it here:

For the Axis Fuzz, go to Fuzz Central, and search this forum for more Axis tips.

ummmm....why on earth would i have to search for the schematic when i was the one who created the pedal ??????

and, as you can see a few replies back, i already posted the schematic in this thread....
