a clean preamp for 1 channel amps

I've got a jmp2203 and an 18watt amp.
i really like the overdrive/distortion on those amps but switching to a clean sound is really hard if i have to do it fast.

so i started thinking...

i would like to build a clean preamp to plug in the return of the fx loop.
With a built in A/B so i can switch between the clean external preamp and the overdriven normal preamp inside the amp with a footswitch.
the clean preamp must be loud.. so i won't have a volume drop when i switch to clean.
And because it would be external, i could use it with both my amps.
Transistor or tube, whatever sounds best (poweramp would be tube anyway cus that's in my normal amp)

Do you guys like the idea?

I don't know enough to design this myself but if anyone has ideas or wants to design something like that (mybe even with accoustic guitar setting) that would be awesome!

Here's one that I pretty much copied off of Rod Elliot's site. I simplified it for my needs. The one I came up with myself distorts a whole bunch, so I thought I'd try his design minus the distortion elements to see if it's a nice clean sound. I'm working way too much to get to this anytime soon. It would probably work better on 15v+/- than 9.

The Alembic F2B is basically a Fender Twin preamp; David Gilmour had a modivified one in his rig for clean, using basically the same setup you are suggesting.

If you want to skip the tubes and the high voltage, you can make an FET emulation of it using the Fetzer Valve at RunoffGroove--just make a pair of them with a tone stack in between.

You can do pretty much the same thing with any preamp design you like--some of the ROG emulations sound good clean, even though they are more likely to be used cranked.  Or try your own, with something like the Ampeg Gemini preamp--clean, with a Baxandahl stack.

and what do you use it for?

I use it to drive an old integrated 50W amp that drives an old ampeg 4 x 10 . I'm realy pleased with it.
