what is that part with the led with "optoisolator" above it?? pictures maybe?

oh and i found in a schematic (mosrite fuzz rite) a resistor with an arrow across it (not to it like a pot). what does that mean?

It an LED/LDR combo. Also called 'vactrol' sometimes

I believe that indicates that the pot should be wired as a variable resistor.

Here is a thread with general info about LED/LDRs.

And here is another.  Both contain great long posts by Mark Hammer.

should i use a trimpot?
Or is it actually a control meant to be on the outside??

When there's an arrow "through" the resistor its a trim pot, when the arrow "points" to the middle etc its an off board pot, like a vol/tone pot in your schem above.

Marty. :)
