One Fet is the buffer stage ant the other is the led switcher i think.
I see this in a turbo rat.

That schem doesn't seem to correspond with what's in my Rat 2.

That's the problem with posting links.  The original page Francisco posted,

says the Rat 2 version on that schematic isn't right.  The other Rat 2 version on that page does have the diodes - my previous post tries to cork-up the holes in that one.

I like my Rat2 for what it is, so it's in that elite group of pedals I own that hasn't been mucked with in some way. But now I'm starting to get curious about "The Rat Variations", so maybe I'll have to put the Rat on my "DIY To Do list".
