I just noticed that my guitar cable is actually making noise itself through my amp.  If I whip the cable on the floor, I hear it throught the speakers!  What is goin' on?

Lots of cables are to a greater or lesser degree microphonic.

Are you sure its not a speaker cable?

Better quality instrument cables have somewhat conductive plastic layer or similar to prevent such noise, maybe static electricity or something capacitively coupling thing causes that on some cables sometimes. Works nice as a click track when you tap the beat with your feet.

Many years ago I tried to use some Apple LocalTalk cables for guitar cable.... you could just about sing into it because it was so microphonic!

Capacitive pickup of the relative motions of the conductors or piezoelectric effect.

Very pronounced in some cables, designed out by (veyr slightly) conductive plastic in some.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

It's the Belden 9271, blue cable.  great tone, and I can live with the microphonic bit........I think!
