Pot Lug numbering, which rule ?

I'm sure that I got my "lug" numbering originally from "Craig Andertons" book and in the FAQ  right here its the same :
Back of pot, lugs pointing down,  left to right    3--2--1
I've had lots of problems with some projects lugs being reversed, and this can really make a mess of otherwise "neat" wiring.
From a schem with the pot ( variable resistor ) sign running down the drawing,  I read that as 3-2-1 also, lug 2 is sometimes the output and lug 1 sometimes ground, always at the bottom  . . . . .
This has caused "Torchy" to re-draw some of his layouts as his "rule" is the opposite  . . . . . .

WHAT IS CORRECT  ??
or is it a "UK  -- USA"  thing . . . . .

Thanks,

...i've always done it like this....it means that as you turn the pot "clockwise", the volume/gain/tone turns "up"....

Yup thats the same as me . . . .

Best numbering? No numbers at all. Put a designator on the lug that connects to the wiper when the shaft is rotated fully clockwise.

In the past, I've seen a dot by the clockwise lug, an arrow on the wiper to indicate clockwise rotation.

Numbering just adds one more layer between you and what you want to know.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
