I used my Les Paul. It's nothing spectacular, but I think the amp sounds pretty good.

Very cool.  Sounds awesome.  This makes me wnat to work on that lm4780 amp.  However since I found a amp for cheap I went that route.  I will eventually build my own just for the fun of building one.

How far away is the mic?

So it's just the preamp directly into your cabinet?  What kind of power do you think that is producing?  You are using +/- 9v to power it.  Could you up that to the 28V that the lm3886 can do with no problems?

Edit:  I misread what you wrote.  You made a lm3886 amp and you have that preamp going into it, right?

Yes. It's all part of the package. I used a second PS(12.6v @ 300ma) for the Preamp and cooling fan cause I bought an undersized tranny(28v @56va) for the amp. I'd say it's only making about 20 watts or so the way I built it. If I do it again I'll use a much bigger tranny(@ least 300va).

The mike is as close as I can get it about midway across the cone. It's just one of those cheap computer mikes.

It makes a great at home practice amp as is though.

That is pretty simple then.  I know someone who'd want one of these....
