Could 3 AA batteries be used in circuits where only 4.5 volts is called for?  Would they last longer or shorter?

Also, what about for passive pedals that onyl have LEDs?  A single AA or AAA batter seems like it could be a nice idea for space conservations.  Would they last a long time?

What about watch sized batteries?

And finally....

All things being equal, I assume the larger battery lasts longer?

I'm not real sure about lasting longer or shorter...I always figured that relates to size, and composition...[ besides...Carbon Vs Alkaline Vs Super Alka's...etc.]
I've used lithium for low voltage circuits, and they seem to do just fine...all I know about it...never read current ratings 'n such's that..because I never happened on it....I suppose I could go look up battery spec sheets, and wonder what the current capability of a teeny lithuim is.
I've also used AA and other type batteries to power Cct.s N/P...I just read the voltage.
Carbon Comps reportedly do something for FF's..I wouldn't know.
 I use NiMh rechargables for a long Time, I think that's ok...lol.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

A 9 volt battery is just 6 AAAs in a bundle.  The AA should last fine.
