Either a project, or a commercially available model. Something that tracks extremely good. Even digital will do(if it's something you guys would recommend buying).

PAiA Rocktave.  Tracks like a charm due to the onboard compander.  Steady input signal levels and intelligent pre-sputter gating are the key.  The Rocktave is a VERY mod-able circuit.  Consider scoring a 1590C or larger for this one.  You may have to defer your next car purchase just to pay for the pots, toggles, and knobs I am sure you will want to install.
