Hey all,

Just listening to the new Mars Volta album, Frances the Mute.  On track 8, there is an effect that sounds exactly like my Ugly Face - some fuzzy, fizzy, envelope filtering and then some space invaders type stuff.  I know Omar's really into effects (obviously) so this wouldn't surprise me a bit.  The Ugly Face is pretty darn cool!

*feels nauseous and dizzy*

i got to sit down.  oh, i am.  i better go lie down then.  wake me when I've accumulated enough wealth to afford even a tiny fraction of that stuff.  :P

Johnny G

wow he only has the reissue whammy.

theres some pretty groovy stuff there

Z is the fuzz probe the top corner of the leftmost pedal board in that pic? i cant make it out too well. man id love to have that much stuff to play with :D

actually right now id kill to have one of those orange heads and a cab. im in desperate need of a new amp :(

EDIT:

actually looking at that now there's a fair few things that are expensive (fuxx probe, 2 of the line 6 moddelers, the wahmmy etc) but i cant see anything that is in the outrageous price, tone mojo sillyness area. maybe im justmissing it

Man, those Orange amps and cabs are about as cool as you can get.  Only time I've seen them in a store was at a place in Toronto on Queen Street that had some of the best vintage gear I've ever seen.  A friend of mine bought a Wurlitzer piano there.

I wonder when that picture was taken, because I know that for the recording of Frances the Mute the group decided to go with absolutely NO digital equipment (meaning no Line 6, no Pro Tools).

Congrats Zach on having Omar use your gear.  Hes a hell of a guitarist.

They do look cool, but from what I've heard (nameless Orange dealer), you'd need a full-time amp tech to keep the things running. That and an endorsement deal and you'd be all set.

Really? they not so reliable then? i was vaguelly, sort of, mebee thinking a little about possibly (wow im descisive :D) getting the rockerverb 50 head but im probablly gonna end up building my amps, all 7 of them :P

a pink Fuzz Probe would be pretty sexy. infact a fuzz probe in general would be pretty sexy but im not going to spend any more money on pedals untill ive got me a new amp.....so i say

Never played an orange amp before but always been intregued by them, maybe it's the bloody bright orange covering :)
What amp were they based on? I know a few retro players like having them around because it looks cool - the only one I ever saw have them was jimmy page, who definately knew his gear.

The vintage Orange amps are not really based on anything AFAIK.
Some people with a bad character may think of them as as Marshall with cost savings because they use only two ECC83's for the preamp and the (concertina) phase splitter combined.
Therefore they are fairly clean and they sound "big". The more clean sound or rather the sound on the verge of breakup is a guitar sound that i prefer over flat distortion.
I built an Orange clone myself but since I play bass in my band I hardly use it. It has served very well for a while in our band and it converted our guitar player from using SS amps to tube amps (Fender in his case).

BTW if you like Mars Volta, be sure to listen to At The Drive-In. It was their former band. I was really knocked off my feet when I heard them for the first time.
