Tube distortion pedal idea?

Could you use a tube carrying a triode and a pair of diodes to make a tube distortion pedal similar in design to the electra, OD-1. or even the beloved tube screamer? I have seen such monsters around...

In theory, yes. There are some old radio tubes that would fit the bill.

yes, that's what i was hoping to hear...  now, here's the tricky question: would it sound tubey? are tube diodes as "sloppy" as tube triodes?
