I want to dive into recording and mixing music. At the v least Id like to be able to make sample .mp3s for my pedals. Can the recording afficionados (sp!) on this board make recommendations for books/links that will help me find the right track? Im wanting to steer in the direction of PC based rather than a standalone system.

I have a PA system, SM58s and a slew of PCs - hopefully something can be made of all this.

Have you got software to record with? if you haven't I can reccomend n-track. The most helpful things I ever read was artciles with Jimmy page talking about recording.

Soundcard...better at least, most say go 'best'
 You've got mics IMO...
Tube between mic/soundcard was suggested as a good...
Right now I'm running a P3, but after about 5-7 tracks worth of content it starts stopping 'n stuff.
I copped some PDGood recordings using an EV757 [IIRC] and a Soundblaster Card, Cakewalk 'n Wavelab.
Dang recorders are hard to keep working IME, I need to know more I think to get it working again.
I'ts real nice when it's working, I don't know if I need more equipment or better maintenance training.

I've been using a 4 track, sound blaster sound card and a product called "goldwave" for a couple years now. Check out the website link above and all will be revealed!!

the tapeop.com messageboard is down for the moment, but is usually my favorite resource for these things.
