I just built this thing on stripboard (thats Torchy!!!).  I like it - its cool.  I was too eager to get it in a box and bring it to school, so I bought a $1 RACO to put it in.  Made it a ~$10 build...not too bad :-D  Then I brought it to school the day after a school shooting :(.  I was actually slightly looking forward to getting caught with it and missing class lol.

I really wanted to experiment with different diodes, so I socketed.  But like I said, I was too eager to get it into a box, so I never did this.  I just left in the first diodes I tried - Ge's, I think 1n270s.  How does silicon change the sound?

Personally, I prefer the silicon diodes I used in mine as it adds a 'dynamic' element to the sound - it changes markedly if you pluck the string harder or softer. The point here isn't clipping, so I don't see any benefit in using germanium.
