I was checking out old links in my bookmarks last night and came across this ... Don't know if it had been posted before,

http://www.marchandelec.com/fg.htm

It does frequencies from 1Hz up to 20kHz, independant level and function for left and right channels, does sine, triangle, square, sawtooth, pulse, white and pink noise! Will do three decimal places in the lower frequencies.

Of course you need a PC with a sound card, close to your bench.  Best of all, it's freeware. Just thought I'd pass it on...

Beginner question alert.

What uses could this program have?

useful for testing circuits, especially for troubleshooting, provides continuous tone so you can probe the circuit to see where you have signal and where you don't ...

It's easier than trying to use an instrument, allows you to use both your hands

for more advanced work could be useful to determine exactly at what frequency a response is rolling off at ...

the lower end, 1Hz to 10Hz (?) could be used in the place of an LFO (depending on circuit) for troubleshooting modulation or proof of concept in design stage?
