Modded TS-10 sucks trebles?

I recently got a dirt cheap TS-10 (missing its opamp) off eBay, so I thought I'd mod it a bit while I was soldering in a socket.

I followed the instructions for the TS-10 -> 808 mods from this page:
http://home.earthlink.net/~lens/p11-amp.htm

Well, my TS10 came out a bit mushy. It was okay when the tone knob was up past about 3 o'clock, but that doesn't seem right...With my modded Blues Driver, I have to keep the tone knob down around 9 or 10 o'clock to avoid excessive treble. But even when I keep the TS10's tone knob straight up at noon, a lot of the highs get cut off (when I compare various drive settings to the bypassed tone).

Maybe it's because TS circuits boost mids? Is loss of high end normal?

The only changes I made from the above link were (1) I didn't replace the tantalum caps and (2) I put in a TL072 opamp until I get some kind of 4558 or NE5532 from mouser.

Would those make that much of a difference? What should I be looking at here?

It sounds like there's a capacitor value problem in there, or a broken part or PCB trace.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

That could very well be....(the PCB trace, I mean)

It actually looked like someone had tried to mod it before I dove in. Probably the guy who sold it. He said that he bought it without a chip intending to mod it...I think he might have started the mod, gotten in over his head, and sold it.

I completely removed the components from a few places that looked like they had bad solder joints. I cleaned off the pads with solder wick and they all looked okay, but it could have been a problem in another area.

Are there any places I should start looking? I'm not sure how to tell which areas of the pedal would affect the trebles. I've got a few capacitors coming from Mouser, so there are a few more places I can clean up once those get here...

But what should I be looking for?

I guess I should read your article, huh?
