I have replaced D6 in my sd-1 with a Grermanium 1N34A. I have heard that you can replace the others. What effect would replacing all three diodes with the 1N43A?- John

lower threshold than Si's.
Leave the RP protection diode alone.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Khas Evets

In addition to the lower threshold, germaniums also have a different sound, that I happen to like. They're not as buzzy as silicon. Also, if you don't like the lower threshold, you could increase it by putting multiple diodes in series.

So by lower threshold what does that mean and what would I likly hear replacing the other 2 diodes to the germanium?- John

Hi.
Lower threshhold means lower output signal levels (because they have been "clipped" to a low level).  This is easily corrected by turning up the volume control a little.  A significant part of the magic of germanium diodes is the low level at which they clip, so it's really a good thing.
