After pricing a few Ibanez pedals on the used market (found a reissue FL9 mint for $59), I'm considering a DIY flanger.
For the price/trouble, should I just pick up the FL9? I have a gift card for the store where it is and can get it for $49.

Or..........
Recommend one to build.

Thanks guys,

For the price and trouble, you should ALWAYS buy it.  Even if it's $299 and you have to pay off some street thugs on the way to the store.  Diy is a lot of trouble.

$60 ain't bad.

But if you want to learn and do it yourself, cruise on over to www.generalguitargadgets.com and check out the flanger projects over there.

Check out John Hollis's Ultimate Flanger:

and Tonepad's Ibanez 301:

Oooooo......the Ultra Flanger........
Guess I forgot about that one.
I've heard not-so-great things about the Ibanez FL301DX, so I've decided against that one. I'll compare the parts pricing vs. the FL9 (if it's still there) and decide.
More than likely, it'll be between the Ultra Flanger and the EH Dlx Electric Mistress.

Thanks guys!

One of the nice things about being able to buy a pedal cheap is that all the groundwork has been done for you and you can move directly to mods.

I certainly can't speak for how much cash you have on hand or how much your time is worth, but the parts alone would have cost you $25-$30....IF you were able to score them dirt cheap.  Figure $10 for a box, $10 for the pots and knobs, another $10 at least for the components.  Okay, now ask yourself how much your time is worth?  Is it worth at LEAST $2/hr?  If it is worth more than that to you then the $49 price tag is an absolute steal.

Very true, Mark Hammer.
Not to mention the MN3007 (on the Ultra Flanger) is another $10, plus a 3PDT switch is $6.25. It adds up.
I may go for the FL9. My playing time is getting overruled by my building time.
Thanks again,
