So did we ever figure out what was up with the Fulltone OCD?

I could give a damn about cloning the OCD, I'm just interesting in knowing if Fuller has finally produced an original design. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but fulldrive=tubecreamer, DP=Ratt, Fat Boost=AMZ...)

It sounds good from what I hear, but what wouldn't sound good through the gear he records sound clips on?

I have always been impressed with the build quality of his stuff though.

Ya, I'm still just curious... And, out of curiosity, I typically buy, then clone, then resell on ebay - everything I like in the non-digital rhelm. I'm sure I'll eventually get to the OCD too, but right now my time is better spent on tweaking some more original stuff...

What blows me away about Fulltone stuff is the mechanical design - really 2nd to none - especially on the DP1 and '69/'70 (simple - but done right).

Your right though.. with that equipment (amps/mics..) even simple diode clipper would sound awesome!!

Well, it looks like mine will be here monday. I though I cancelled my order back in February, but that's Musictoyz.com for you

I am quite interested to see what it sounds like through gear that costs less than a college education. Fuller's stuff is incredibly well made, but I just can't get over the degree to which he seems to WANT to come across like an ass. From his website:

QuoteBecause 99% of all pedals use clipping diodes to achieve their distortion, and the net result is you are lopping off the upper frequencies (harmonics) and most of the lower frequencies, leaving mostly only Midrange. Can you say Toob-Screemer?

...Or Fulldrive?

And then there was that snarky reference to the Klon he had on his Fat Boost page--the Fat Boost, a design he clearly, uhm...borrowed from someone else. Why do I always feel a little dirty when I by Fulltone gear?

Interesting ... Hmm... I think a person could make the case for dynamic responce being impacted by diode clippers, but there needs to be a capacitive load on the clipping circuit to directly affect upper frequency response - unless he's refering to a mega-clipping metal thing... then, I guess there could be more going on... But, in general discrete component overdrive (FETs, BJTs...) is great for a nice dynamic - yet over driven - sound.

I wouldn't feel dirty about buying Fulltone, or any other stuff... The guy is anti-DIY and fond of himself - but his company does make some gear that is great for working musicians. I see it like this; if I can buy something for $150, make my own copy (learing a thing or 2 along the way - especially about mechanical design..) - that might be even better sound/mechanical wise for $50, then turn around and resell the original I bought for $155 (to some dude in Something-stan) off of ebay... your cost is $45 and you learned a lot in the process that you can put into other projects and share with others...  :D

Well, my OCD came today--it's a good sounding pedal for sure. It actually sounds very similar to a tubescreamer to my ears--but in all fairness, a tubescreamer is all that I'm used to.

It has A LOT more gain than a screamer--and it does seem a little bit more "airy" or "open." As far as comparing the sound to someone pulling a blanket off your amplifier, I don't know about that...

And yes, the guts of my OCD are covered with a bunch of JB Weld looking stuff--it's all over everything, the board, and even the jacks. It looks like if anything little thing inside the OCD were to break, you'd have to send the whole pedal back. I'm not sure if I like that.

Whatever...I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep it, knowing what I can get out of it on ebay...
