What kind of effect/amp is this? (Prince mp3 sample inside)

Any ideas what kind of effect or effect/amp combination this is? BTW, its from an old Prince bootleg recorded in New Orleans 1981.

I didn't listen to the sample, but Prince has been described in print as generally using a Boss-only pedalboard.  What he had in 1981 may be a different matter, but there would not have been a whole lot beyond the major manufacturers at that point in time.

So it's most likely a compressor followed by a distortion and/or a cranked up amp?

Yeah, sounds like his Telecaster copy, a Boss compressor and an overdrive.
