Can I do it with a cordless drill and regular bit within some limits of reasonable safety?  I want to put in a LED and  external pot.

It should be no problem.  I added a DC jack on the side of a Dunlop case.

This stuff is just as soft as the aluminum boxes. Just hold on tight and when you go up to those big bits you'll know why you need to get a drill press!

Assuming your bits are in good shape and your drill is powerful enough you should be fine. Use lots of lube and put some tape around the area you are drilling to help reduce the possiblity of cracking the powder coat.
