AD3208: One Repeat Only?!?!?!

Had this up as a follow up to another post, but thought I'd try another as it's not getting much action.
Got the unit running after rerouting the pins on the 3208's, and what I have is one repeat only. On the scope the input at both 3208's seems good (a bit distorted, but good), and the compander seems to function just fine. The voltage at the zener diode is only 6.8V where it should be 8.2V (point S on Sch.). A bit suspect, but I have a hunch that the first repeat is't making it back through the BBD's for the additional repeats. The repeat pot does nothing, but all the trimmers seem to be functioning as I can tune the delayed signal out with them and control a bit of the distortion on the repeat. I tried the mod on GGG for more repeats, no dice, same thing. I socketed the resistor and left the 47K in instead of the 100K.
Also tried jumping the compander (jumper from point A to the center lug of the repeats pot. This took out the delayed sound altogether.
Poked and probed, nothing. Took out  the jumper and the one repeat was back.
Still, only one repeat. It's a great sounding repeat, but a solitary one and I'd like a few more. I'd spring for  a 3205 but I'm sure the 3208's can get more than one repeat when working properly, which it seems they're not.
Any ideas anyone? I have no idea how the BBD's work, really, which kills the possibility of my performing any effective troubleshooting.
Thanks-
Jason

All of your comments presume one basic thing: that the repeat pot works properly.  Is this the case?  I've had plenty of pots that LOOKED like they were brand new and would work fine, and when I checked in greater depth the rivets that held the solder lugs and resistive element in place were simply not making proper contact.  It may sound just plain dumb but give the rivets on the outside lugs a little pinch with your needle-nose pliers and tell us if it makes a difference.
