AC187K/188K Question

I just bought some of these off of ebay and i'm trying to figure out why they are a matched pair of NPN and PNP transistors....  I've seen the spec sheets for both of then and they are the same sans type, but i can't see where they could be used in a circuit together.  I mainly wondering if they need to be paired together or can i break the pairs up and put the NPNs together and the PNPs together...
