Mildly off topic, but it is a build.

What're some good types of speakers to use in a 4x12" Cab?

I was lookin at Celestion Century Neodymium.

I think I'd rather "roll my own" cab  :D
as opposed to buy one.

Avatar has the best prices on speakers and they also have killer prices on their cabs.  Check out their "Hellatone" speakers.  They are actually Celestion V30 and G12H 30's that they break in and relabel at a killer price.

Checkout sammi speakers, alot of guys from www.18watt.com say they are vintage 30 killers and higher powered and only aorund $30-40 U.S new.

If you're rollling your own, consider that a larger cabinet may offer you advantages, like 'better'/different bass response, of course if it's a bear to actually move it's probably too big IMO.
I'm a Celestion Greenback person [I'd like to afford some VOX speakers...or if I could get my hands on some Matchless drivers], therefore I suggest Jensen, because I think they're similar.
"english sound types [Peavey or other] such as Sheffield are reportedly similar...I'm sure there are other brands.
I find the lower watt speakers make a great tone, and make a cabinet sound loud...ie 75w speakers seemed more midrangey and maybe cut through more, when pushed hard to do so, but that is getting away from 'tone before volume' theory I tend to stick to.
'The small watters' are What I've used anyway for nice warm tubesound breakup. depends on what you want em to do. Neodynum [IIRC} are known for lightweight, high output and being very clean...I tried some for a minute once, way different than what I'm used to.

Sorry, they're EV speakers, the model is the M 12L.  Its a very high wattage, practically hifi speaker with 20 or so pound magnets.  Zakk wylde used them (or still does) in his marshall cabs.  They dont distort.  They'll take all you've got.  The Celestion neodymiums are in a similar vein, very high wattage clean and efficient speakers.

I bought two different Sammi speakers and am still amazed. They are very nice speakers. I did an A/B comparision of them verse a Celestion V30 and while it was close, I preffered the Sammi. The Sammi sounded like it had a "tighter" bass, with a very solid sound. The midrange on the V30 and Sammi were closer. For the money, Sammis are definately worth checking out. Both there 40 watt and 100 watt models are the ones I have tried, and I love them both. I beleive you can get these still from HeeBGB over at 18watt.com. Hope this helps,

It's a build, but really, it has zip to do with stompboxes.  Believe me, do yourself a favor and post at some place like The Gear Page (www.thegearpage.net) - you'll get TONS of more appropriate reponses, and can search the archives which have 100x more speaker info than here.  Don't be afraid to broaden your forum reading horizons!

hey vanhansen!

i use two vintage 30s for my jcm800 copy and they sound great, actually i'm gonna buy two more and make myself a 4x12 box...

but since i wanted to have a full stack, thought i could have one box with vintage 30s and one with greenbacks..

how does the greenback sound?

vintage 30 is a very well balanced with nice highs and mids, i play the thing crancked allthe way with a lot of distortion and can play alice in chains and that kind of distorted music...

altough i could benefit a bit more low end, actually 2x12" can't be 4x12" so i'll never know till i build a 4x12".

are greenbacks mid rangey? i don't like stock marshall cabs, they all sound ugly to me, dunno what they put in, some g12 or some stuff like that, no matter what you plug in it always sounds like ugly led zep sound... ;) altough page had nice sound...

so i'm kind afraid to buy this speaker, i hope it's not midrange maddness...

cheers!

The Greenbacks sound totally different than what come in the cabinets stock.  The stock ones are G12-75R's I believe, 75 watts a piece for a 300 watt 4X12.

The Greenbacks are 25 watts each, 100 watt 4X12.  Their sound is so smooth.  I wouldn't say they are midrangey, but to my ears are more even and have a nice early breakup.

Marshall cabs are actually pretty darn nice.  Crappy speakers will make the best built cab sound horrible.

Check out the link that cd posted.  You should find some nice frequency response info there that will help.

Your always going to get varying views regarding a Q of this nature and thats rightfully so however IMHO the EV is a class act but with a price tag, certainly here in the UK, I've also found in the past that they dont react too well with EL84 amps for reasons I am not aware of however there excellent with 6L6 Fender combos etc. I'm using a Laney LC50 at present and I fitted a Celestion Century because I had used it before in a Fender Blues Junior with great results so I would have no hesitation recommending the Century for a 4x12 from a sound and weight perspective, I certainly wouldn't want to move a 4x12 EV cab around thats for sure.

thats what i posted for, opinions.  I've never had much experience with speakers, and Opinions are nice to hear sometimes (other than political :D )

there's no short answer to this thread I guess.

Through classic AB amps (like bassman's and marshalls) you really can't beat pre-rola greenbacks (I like the 60Hz variety).  But these really don't cut it in live situations.  I have a stack loaded with V30 that pulls this duty and it's pretty mostrous sounding.  Has a fizziness that really makes it through the mix when your playing something like a les paul (but can be unbarable sometimes with my tonemaster).  If you can't afford or don't want to deal with vintage then G12H30s come pretty close.

I need to try to find the time to get some weber speakers...as always it's the lack of fundage that keeps this type of thing from happening.

oh I forgot about those JBL D120Fs...those are pretty sick especially when they're loaded in smaller 2x12 cabs.

Mojah63

I've got a oversized Mesa 4X12 with Vin30's that rock. I really don't like my 73 Marshall with greybacks... There are some Sammi  12's  on special at Parts Express.. Don't really know much about them other than the 18 watters
and Dobberman amp builders LOve Them...
For my money: Avatar cabs are really hard to beat for the money. It's not really worth making one then buying speakers.
I'm personally downsizing right now and getting some Emience Delta Pro's wich are like EVM 12L put into two 1X12's. I'm using some Line6 stuff. I can't be lugging around 110 lbs 4X12's and Marshall heads anymore by myself....

It might help a bit if you said what type of sound your going for and what type of music you play. Everybody will have a different opion on the speakers but those answers may help narrow your search.
