I've been looking at numerous schems and am about to (for amusement) attempt to modify this old distortion pedal i have.

One thing though. what component dictates the clipping of the sine wave?

if im asking a common question.... please dont hurt me! ;)

a Denio Distortion.

it's not great sounding and i figured i would mess around with it for a bit before delving into builing a pedal from scratch.

A schematic first makes it easy to decide where to mod.
This may or may not be a search item, I don't know if a schematic is accessible for your unit. You can probably trace it out though.
Or at least if you can figure out How it clips.
TS Type clipping [opamp feedback loop diode clipper]
DIST+ [SP To ground diode type clipping]
 Transistor type clipping
Transistor with diode [a 'la BMP] type clipping.
 other?
