And-- when it gets down to it- Do you either have to luck out and get matching ones from a small handfull or do as he did and check 76 of them? I was wondering why Smallbear dont sell matched pairs? How does anyone ever build a phase 90? Do i assume they went though a huge number before they got a matching set or 2?

Jimbob,

Yes, it takes a lot of matching.  But, 100 2N5952's from Mouser will only set you back $7.00.  http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?handler=displayproduct&lstdispproductid=262687&e_categoryid=277&e_pcodeid=51258

An evening at the kitchen table, and you would have a few piles of matched FETs for projects that you might need them for.  You could always build a PWM phaser.  No matching required.   :P

yea- thats not too bad i guess. I was under the impression it was a lot more than that. I think ill give'r a try some time. Maybe ill make a few of them(phasers) while im at it.

Or- i just realized- forget bout the phase 90's. Theres the EH Small Stone and many other great ones that dont include such an issue.

by the way, if anyone is interested in selling me a pair of matched j201, please pm me... I bought some but could not find a matching pair, pretty sad. I just don't want to buy more and more and then have a stock of jfets for more pedals than I'll probably do this life

loki

hey this site here sells matched transistors
http://www.banzaieffects.com/europe/index.html

yeah it's in europe, but still...

barret77

yeah, it's cheaper to buy 100 jfets than 4 from that site...

Whats the +/- range to call something a 'match'?
I did about 10 last night and not one was a 'match' but several were within 5 or so HFE.
