I checked the price of a Unibit earlier today and found it to be around $20-$25 bucks.   I checked the price of a tapered reamer that goes from 1/8" to 1/2" and it was $4.00.

At the end of the day... when the jacks and switches are mounted and the washers and nuts are put on and snugged.... whats the difference???

At the end of the day your hands will be hurting if you're making a whole bunch of boxes.... other than that.... the reamer still needs a hole to start with so you need a bit either way. If you're going to use a reamer, then why not just use the bit for the size hole you want in the first place. ;)

The Unibit does not create the right sized holes for most components, but they're close enough for Rock & Roll and you only need one bit. :) I do most of my prototyping with one, only to wish I had taken more time on a drill press in the end. Oh well... you can sure tell which boxes were drilled by hand.

If you do electrical contracting work, Unibits are much better than sliced bread because you're usually cutting fairly thin material and you may not even have the clearance to use a reamer while you make a 1 inch wide hole. Unibits also do a much better job of polishing the edges of the hole too.

I very much appreciate the response.

I'm curious....do they make those things big enough for a tube socket???

I know that's stretching things a bit.........but I had to ask......its probably cheaper than the Greenlee punches I'd need for 9 pin and octal......

i use a tapered reamer for making tuner holes bigger in headstocks.  It is a must  for that type of work.  I have seen unibits online for 15$ plus shipping, in  the home depot they were around 45$!  I might get one online from small bear on my next order for parts on Axis Face.(if he carries them)
